Welcome!

I'm Sara Baumann , MD

I am a reproductive psychiatrist, which is a mental health professional and medical doctor who specializes in helping people with emotional or psychological challenges related to reproductive health and hormones (such as during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum).

Warm, Knowledgeable, Empowering

Pregnancy and postpartum are often incredibly stressful, and it’s common to feel overwhelmed, anxious, or down during these times. You’re not alone. But often, there isn’t enough time in your prenatal appointments to talk about and address these aspects of your experience. As a reproductive psychiatrist, I’m uniquely trained to help you navigate mental health challenges, whether it’s managing anxiety during pregnancy, overcoming postpartum depression, or planning ahead and thinking preventatively. I also offer expert guidance on psychiatric medications during pregnancy and breastfeeding, as well as non-medication treatment options. My services include both one-time consultations and ongoing care.

About

Hi! I’m a board-certified psychiatrist and a passionate advocate for improving mental health awareness and care for new parents and parents-to-be. I specialize in Reproductive Psychiatry, a small but growing field that focuses on treating mental health concerns at times of hormonal transition (related to the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, postpartum, and menopause). Many general psychiatrists and other mental health providers unfortunately have little to no training in these areas, so working with a reproductive psychiatrist ensures you have access to expert knowledge and care at these important stages. Before starting my own practice, I completed my psychiatry residency at UCSF and worked on faculty at UC Davis. My office is in Midtown and I also offer virtual visits. I see patients for a variety of symptoms and conditions during pregnancy and postpartum, including anxiety, depression, other mood fluctuations, stress, insomnia, intrusive thoughts, trauma, loss, post-weaning depression, ADHD, and OCD. If you have a history of a mental health condition or take medication, it can also be helpful to plan ahead for pregnancy or postpartum by consulting with a reproductive psychiatrist. Providing warm, responsive, and individualized care is my utmost goal. I approach mental health holistically, taking into consideration not only your emotional context, but also your physical, social, and relational health. These are all vital to understand and support in order to improve your symptoms, your quality of life, and your bandwidth as a new parent.

Hear from my families

"The Rebecca Rose Doula Team is absolutely incredible ❤️ They are the best decision I made throughout pregnancy, birth, and postpartum by far: I couldn’t have done it without them. Everyone on the team was a wealth of knowledge leading up to and during labor and they helped bring our beautiful baby boy peacefully into this world. Their postpartum care was crucial to our family’s healing, learning how to take care of a newborn, and navigating the journey into parenthood. The love these women have for their clients shines so brightly through their work!!! "

"Becca is a class act. She is thoughtful, crazy smart and a badass doula/birth supporter/postpartum goddess. Becca came into my life 2 weeks postpartum when my husband and I were at the end of our rope. We weren’t sleeping, didn’t know enough about taking care of our little one, and just needed help. And help arrived in the form of this amazing person. We said to her, “oh, he doesn’t like to be swaddled” but she did swaddle him and then snuggled him and he quieted instantly. For the first time in two weeks we got some sleep. I wish I had her throughout my pregnancy because I think it would have helped me so much. She is the greatest emotional and physical support that I needed during my postpartum recovery. I honestly can’t say enough good things about this amazing woman and educator. Her passion for her job, babies and WOMEN is truly inspiring. I am so excited to see where her career takes her. She will - very very quickly - become the most sought-after doula and midwife in town."

" Having Becca as my birth doula made all the difference in having the birth of my dreams! I was a home birth transfer, I couldn’t think straight or gather my emotions on transferring to the hospital. Becca supported my husband and I in ways I will never be able to repay her for. Her loving heart, calmness, knowledge, and physical support during my birth was so needed. I was able to have an amazing, unmedicated, no intervention hospital birth with Becca by my side helping me advocate for myself the whole way. I felt so educated and empowered. Thank you Becca for being you. You’re truly unbelievably amazing."
